(A) A schematic of wave number–spiral acoustic tweezers. The acoustic tweezers are composed of M pairs of IDTs, evenly distributed around the coordinate origin O. In each pair, two IDTs [denoted as IDTmL and IDTmR (m = 1, 2, ⋯, M)] are symmetrically arranged on different sides of the origin O. One multitone signal encoded with phases [φmL]M and amplitudes [AmL]M at frequencies [fm]M is the excitation for M IDTs (denoted as [IDTmL]M) on the left side; another signal with phases [φmR]M and amplitudes [AmR]M at frequencies [fm]M is for M IDTs (denoted as [IDTmR]M) on the right side. (B) The wave numbers k of SAWs generated by IDTs gradually change with respect to direction θ, tracing two central symmetric spirals in the wave number space. (C) The wave frequencies f also gradually change with respect to direction θ, as derived by f(θ)=k(θ)2π⋅s(θ), where s(θ) is the slowness of SAWs.

In the world of Aerospace, Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner contains 30 3D printed parts. Construction of the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon also comprises additive manufacturing, while the USAF and Israeli Air Force also claim to have used the technology.

This entrenched standard forces the breeder to select for similar genetic traits; it squeezes out diversity. The wacky purple carrot becomes a casualty, but so do differently shaped and sized carrots, and the distinctively flavored ones, or the carrots best suited for cold hardiness or drought resistance. Unique kinds of carrots — the product of decades, if not generations of selection — are discarded.

Scrap metal is lifted into a baler from a pile (seen here) at Kramer’s Auto Parts and Iron Co. in Grand Island. The scrap metal is shaped into a square and sent out for recycling. (Independent/Barrett Stinson)

There is now a patent on “low pungency” onions and “brilliant white” cauliflower. There are patents on grape tomatoes with enhanced sweetness and a long “shelf life” gene and a patent on a “pleasant tasting” melon (which sounds as tempting as toothpaste). For lettuces, there are too many to count — salad greens are some of the most lawyered-up vegetables in your refrigerator.

There will be demonstrations of Renishaw’s machine calibration and diagnostic technologies, designed to monitor the static and dynamic performance of machine tools, co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and other position-critical motion systems, to ultimately establish a known and repeatable level of process capability. These will include Renishaw’s new XK10 alignment laser system which has been developed to measure geometric and rotational errors of machine tools. Used with the XK10 machine tool fixturing kit, it enables faster and easier measurements over traditional methods, such as dial gauges, autocollimators and metrology artefacts. XK10 can be used on linear rails to ensure that they are straight, square, flat, parallel and level, as well as to assess spindle direction and coaxiality of rotary machines. Live error readings allow adjustments to be made to the machine during the alignment process.

Stratolaunch Systems Corp. completed the first flight of the world’s largest all-composite aircraft at California’s Mojave Air and Space Port. With a dual-fuselage design and wingspan greater than the length of a football field, the Stratolaunch reached 189mph, flying for 2.5 hours up to 17,000ft over the Mojave Desert. As part of the April 13, 2019, flight, the pilots evaluated aircraft performance and handling qualities.

The clarity of the earnest strokes, the perfected angles and immaculately radiused curves intersect like precision crosshairs. These instil a technical superiority to their owners and leave us with a sense of competent infallibility. Surely the context of the application of these marks demands an equally rigid environment with little margin for whimsy. If anything, these symbols may be just formal enough to sway you to arrive at their office in a freshly starched shirt.

“Working on the principle of centring the workpiece on its outside diameter without the application of pressure, then clamping from the inside diameter, InoTop prevents unwanted polygon formations in the clamping process and results in the efficient production of high-quality parts.”

And at least 76 individual parts had falsified inspection reports, were never inspected, and then were shipped to SpaceX, prosecutors said.
