These questions were the focus of the so-called FutureLAB at the Grinding Symposium. Technology presentations and lectures, as well as the presentation of partner companies and suppliers, were other focal points of the conference.

Ross has worked with his Mastercam Reseller, MCAM Northwest, since day one. Tim Rowley, founder of MCAM Northwest, and his team provide technical support for Ross’s two seats of Mastercam Mill 3D, one seat of Mastercam Multiaxis, and one seat of Mastercam Design. Rowley also keeps the software up to date and offers extra support for rollouts. He shared that the software perfectly complements the high-precision prototyping Ross does. “He’s looking for surface finishes that are way beyond what most shops that do prototyping are. He’s always pushing the boundaries,” Rowley said. Luckily his software works just as hard.

The evening events, which took place in the nearby Kursaal in Bern, also provided an opportunity for exchange. While coming together to eat, drink and enjoy an exceptional entertainment program, the participants entered into conversation, crossing national and language boundaries.

And for a variety of reasons, it was the material of choice, although it doesn’t have the highest superconducting transition temperature. 

Curtiss Hoffman will discuss his new book, “Stone Prayers: Native American Constructions of the Eastern Seaboard,” at 7 p.m. June 13 at the Ashland Community Center, 162 West Union St. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing after the presentation. Tens of thousands of stone monuments are scattered throughout the woodlands and fields of the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada. These stone constructions have been the subject of debate among archaeologists and antiquarians for the past 75 years. Were these structures built by colonial farmers removing rocks from their fields, pre-Columbian transatlantic voyagers or as sacred places by the indigenous peoples of the region? Or, are they a result of natural deposition by glaciers or downslope erosion? Hoffman says, “The fourth hypothesis—that these structures were sacred places of indigenous people—has gained significant attention over the past decade as the regional descendant Native communities have offered strong, vocal support to preserve these monuments from encroachment and desecration by development interests.” In his book, Hoffman explores the four hypotheses regarding the stone monuments. He provides a scientific method to test the four hypotheses against a robust set of data — a total of 5,550 sites from the entire region. A longtime Ashland resident, Hoffman holds a Ph.D. from Yale University in Near Eastern Languages and Literatures, and since 1973, has directed field operations at archaeological sites in southern New England.

According to Thiessen, with the Tebis five-axis package, all multi-axis machining operations can be easily and quickly planned and calculated without collisions. Integrated machine kinematics ensure automatic creation of homogeneous toolpaths with tilt direction checking and low tool wear.

That’s because Terry (1772-1852) pioneered the manufacture of interchangeable parts, i.e., parts that were exactly identical and could therefore be used in mass production. With interchangeable parts, there was no need to file or otherwise adjust each component so that it worked with the other parts; it was precisely and cleanly machined for a perfect fit.

Currently our labor laws provide labor protections to “employees,” and none to “independent contractors.” However, the current bimodal categorization has become increasingly difficult to apply. Many workers, not just Uberers and TaskRabbits, share characteristics of both standard employees and conventional independent contractors. In part, this is because employers have deliberately reorganized work in order to transfer some discretion and a great amount of risk to employees. For example, many trucking companies no longer own trucks, but rather require their drivers to lease the trucks themselves, pay the maintenance, and shoulder the risk of damage or depreciation. Once they make these changes, the companies argue that their workers are no longer employees and are not entitled to overtime payments, meal breaks, anti-discrimination protection, or the right to join a union.

The bike isn’t light, at around 31 kg (68 lb). So don’t think that you can just fold it and carry it around all day. But it’s light enough that you could lift it into a trunk or up a flight of stairs without too much struggling.

Sometimes issues do arise, but they’re not because of machining error. Ross explained, “Some of our successes that we have here at Form Factory – from a design standpoint – are the failures. When somebody’s idea fails, at least we answered that question early on and save our customers future headaches and costs further down the road. You prototype to figure out what works and what doesn’t.” Ross will keep working on a prototype with a customer for as long as it takes to find an effective solution.
