“I am excited by what this announcement and what this grant means for Waukegan,” Cunningham said in the joint statement with Schneider. “This will allow for the final cleanup of a long-vacant and contaminated industrial site, opening it up for future redevelopment opportunities on our lakefront.
Given the low investment and rapid production time, one of the technology’s key applications is in prototyping. Here, 3D printing can allow manufacturers to tangibly showcase a prospective concept with highly complex geometries, and get instant feedback on design and functionality.
We think that the behemoths of agribusiness known as Big Food control the food system from up high — distribution, processing and the marketplace muscling everything into position. But really it is the seed that determines the system, not the other way around.
I would make three closing observations related to these informative essays. First, as noted by Larry Mishel, left unchecked, capital market pressures will continue to unravel worker protections and rights. With few exceptions, platform business models blossomed on assumptions by startups and venture funders that they were immune from employment responsibilities. The concerted state legislative and regulatory efforts by Uber, Handy, and others to legislatively reclassify anyone operating off of a platform as an independent contractor are attempts to cement what venture capital has been promoting for many years. As Thomas Piketty reminds us, the political economy of workplace laws has always and will always require determined countervailing efforts to protect workers in the face of such efforts.

RYAN MANDELBAUM: Yeah. I mean, the hope is that– theoretically, I think that– I haven’t seen the most recent theories. But they get close. I mean, right now, even experimentally actually, they’ve been able to create tiny amounts of superconducting material at it seems almost the temperature in Chicago on a cold day.
SCHAUMBURG, IL — Nearly 300 students from 22 northern Illinois high schools competed last Thursday in the Technology & Manufacturing Association’s (TMA) 28th annual Precision Machining Competition, an annual contest designed to encourage students to pursue high-paying careers in advanced manufacturing where skilled workers are in heavy demand.
At the end of this process, they injected sodium hydroxide solution into the PDMS to release the Galinstan droplets and used a pipette to remove both the released droplets and the solution, producing an empty microfluidic structure with this novel cavity.
Houston, TX (June 6, 2019) – CNC machining Trace-A-Matic Corporation has installed two Toyoda FA1050S heavy-duty horizontal centers in Plant 2 at their Houston, TX location. The identically configured centers feature 60HP – 6,000 RPM geared-head spindles, high pressure through spindle cooling, magazines holding 120 tools, and high capacity chip augers. The machine design allows machining of large, heavy workpieces with very high accuracy. Trace-AMatic South’s operation consists of three 25,000-square-foot facilities with Plant 2 serving as a focus factory manufacturing fluid ends used in hydraulic fracturing applications. The newly installed equipment represents the fifth machining cell to manage fluid end demands and provides an additional 20 percent monthly capacity.

Much like the adoption of other emerging technologies— such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality— the capabilities and use cases of 3D printing will soon be limited only by creators’ imaginations.
Six decades ago, a group of physicists came up with a theory that described electrons at a low temperature that could attract a second electron. If the electrons were in the right configuration, they could conduct electricity with zero resistance. The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory, named after the three physicists, is the basis for how superconductivity works at a quantum level. Superconductivity would allow electricity to flow with no loss of heat from its system.
Terry spent the first year experimenting with production methods and making machinery and equipment. He hired additional employees, including a young carpenter named Seth Thomas, who in 1853 would found the famous Seth Thomas clock company in what is now Thomaston (named after him). In year two, using his new gauges, patterns and machine tools, Terry turned out 1,000 movements. The final year, 1809, he produced a whopping 3,000, fulfilling his promise to the Porters and winning a place on clock-making Olympus.
Just like its big brother the Rad Rover, the RadMini Step-Thru excels at transitioning between different types of terrain. Between the front suspension fork and the 4″ fat tires, riding off-road is a breeze. It feels quite comfortable, especially considering that there’s no rear suspension. I was amazed at how smooth my video turned out in sections where I was riding through the middle of a park. The big tires really help at smoothing out the terrain.
